Two years since Super Typhoon Yolanda (International name: Haiyan), many of our Filipino brothers and sisters are still reeling from the loss of lives, homes, and properties. Residents of Culion, Palawan now have the chance to rebuild their lives as 7-Eleven has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Philippines to provide decent homes to 150 families.

7-Eleven Japan Co. Ltd. and PhilSeven Foundation Inc. (PFI) have forged a partnership with Habitat Philippines to commit homes for the residents of Barangay de Carabao in Culion, Palawan. Culion is located in the northern part of Palawan province. It is remote and almost isolated that no media coverage has reached to expose the destruction caused by Typhoon Yolanda. Most of Barangay de Carabao’s residents are indigenous peoples whose main sources of livelihood are farming and fishing.

Through the partnership of Habitat for Humanity Philippines and 7-Eleven, 160 brand new homes designed to be environment-friendly and disaster-resilient will be built to house the families of Barangay de Carabao. Two school buildings will also be built for the community with each building able to accommodate as many as 140 students. These school buildings will also be used as evacuation centers, when the need arises.

7-Eleven will also generate funds to help the communities significantly alleviate poverty and improve children’s edication. “Through this assistance program, indigenous families whose only source of livelihood are farming and fishing in Culion are provided with the means to uplift their quality of life,” shares Jose Victor Paterno, Chairman of PFI.

Habitat for Humanity Philippines and 7-Eleven has set the start date of the project for January 2016 and it is projected to be completed by the end of 2016.
